What decades are your taste sshaped by and who are a few of your favorite artists of all time? That can help us better understand whether your recommendations will be of value to us particularly those of us in the baby boomer generation, many of whom find high quality songwriting, singing, choruses, verses hooks and emotional resonance in today's Americana genre. You define "old heads" as being in what age range? It's a good concept for what you're doing of course

Porridge Radio - yay!

I did my thing and created a Spotify playlist with 3 songs from each of these albums. I obviously included your pick(s) but rounded it out by either the AllMusic.com Editor's picks (only a few of them received reviews), comments on the album or, failing all of those, just the most played. A little less overwhelming than listening to 25 albums! I even included the hip hop one.

This is great! Do you think you’ll do parts 2 and 3 also?

slurping this up, thank you. regardless of ranking the ingredients, you've curated a delicious smoothie. Girl Suit is so fun. Pink Palace too. mixing these in with other stragglers for end-of-year crunch time considerations (for my consiiiiiii-iiii-iiii-iiider-aaaaaation). a perfect soundtrack to accompany the buckets of rain smacking at the window while i get back to my other job: making sure all the genitals are blurred in a tv show. ☕️🎶🌧️

I have so much listening to do based on this one post alone! Thanks, Gabbie!

I haven’t even read recs yet but I love the system!

Gabbie's avatar

that's awesome, thanks for the bit of validation -- I was nervous to roll it out!

I love this system! I generally agree with the ranking of the albums here that I know, but I think Hone Counties is probably top 20. I love it. I haven’t really managed to get into the Bodega album but Adaptation of the Truth About Marie from the deluxe version is one of my favourite songs of the year.

Gabbie's avatar

these albums are not ranked in any way!!

Lou Tilsley's avatar

Oh! I thought the implication was that they were being shared in tiers

Lou Tilsley's avatar

On that basis I would’ve put Home Counties in next weeks list. But maybe I misunderstood.

Gabbie's avatar

I think I get what you mean, though -- home counties shouldn't be higher up on this specific list but just shared later on in the groupings

Gabbie's avatar

oh they are in tiers yes! but this specific list you're reading now isn't in any particular order

Have to agree with you on the top 50 ranking. I’ve been compiling a top 50 list for over a decade (and yes, living in the spreadsheets) but for quite a while I’ve stopped ranking anything below the top 20 instead just listing my honorable mentions alphabetically. Even within the top 20 on any given day one album could be five or ten slots above another just based on how I’m feeling and what I need to hear that day.

A lot of new ones on your list and a couple faves. I think you may have been the one that turned me on to Brigitte Calls Me Baby which is almost certainly a top 20 for me this year. Also really enjoying Been Stellar which’ll likely sit in the bottom 30 of the top 50 (aka the honorable mentions).

Really looking forward to seeing your upcoming lists!!

Gabbie's avatar

thanks so much! I'm glad I turned you on to at least one record. I think I might have to do alphabetical on my next list so as not to confuse ppl (many thought my numbering was ranking despite the disclaimer!)

Boo! We need more order and more decimals!

In all seriousness, there are some great selections here. Pleased to see some love for Good Looks and Cowgirl, and I'm particularly pleased you enjoyed Revival Season who I think are great fun. I approve of the dog on the Big Special cover, too.

Gabbie's avatar

yes that was my favorite of the hip hop list you shared with me (that I hadn't heard of before anyhow)

David Coleman's avatar

I liked how they didn’t seem to be following current trends at all - it’s a real fun throwback record

Calling The Dare a satirization of LCD is 🤌🏽🤌🏽

Gabbie's avatar

I calls them like I sees them

As a massive Letters To Cleo fan, I love that Megan from Work track. Also hadn’t heard of The Dare so I’m loving that album recommendation!

I was worried about including him because I thought he was oversaturated in the ether so I'm really glad I caught somebody he's new for!!
