If You Like [X] Then You'll Like [Y]: Post-Punk
A playlist meant to make you question which wave of post-punk we're in. Also: a radio hour and a book club to keep you busy.
Earlier this week, I dropped an anti-gatekeeper’s post-punk primer.
The Non-Definitive Guide to Post-Punk
I love post-punk, but I also can’t do it justice. It keeps sucking me down into its gaping maw. It’s the quicksand we were all so terrified of falling into when we watched Saturday morning cartoons as children.
Within, I explained in brief what post-punk was, what it sounded like, and what new artists to check out who are reviving that sound now.
Today, I’ll dig deeper into those recommendations and hand over a playlist of everything we’ve discussed and much more.
First, a few announcements
Both of these take place in the New Bands for Old Heads Discord Server. If you need an invite, become a paid subscriber the usual way above, or subscribe outside of Substack.
Radio Hour - Every month I host a radio hour. The next one is on February 15th. The theme is a surprise (last month’s was post-punk, which gave birth to the playlist below!). Treat it as background music, treat is as a chat, treat it is a dance party, whatever you want. 5pm Eastern/2pm Pacific.
Book Club - I threatened to start a book club, and now we’re actually doing it. Our first book is Roddy Doyle’s “The Commitments”. This is going to be very chill, low pressure, and at your pace. Pop in to chat any time in February as your schedule permits.
An Extra Taste of Post-Punk’s New Wave
To recap, last week you learned about Italia 90, Sweeping Promises, The Cool Greenhouse, Drahla, La Sécurité, and Gustaf.
I feel like there’s almost an infinite repository of excellent post-punk revival to get through. Shall we dip into the surplus? Shall we dive into the playlist?
