New Bands for Old Heads Perks, Explained
A quick guide to three of the main paid subscriber benefits: the directory, the recommendation app, and the Discord community.
Quick links:
What is the directory?
The directory is the easiest way to search through New Bands for Old Heads.
It’s a running index of the new bands I’ve recommended in the newsletter, including:
the new band
the older band, artist, or general vibe they might appeal to fans of
the post where I wrote about them
So if you half-remember me recommending a band that sounded like The Velvet Underground, or you missed a few weeks of posts and want to catch up without digging through the archive, this is the place to go.
It also has a tab for every single playlist I’ve ever shared both in this newsletter and elsewhere in the New Bands for Old Heads ecosystem (Tik Tok; I’m talking about Tik Tok).

Is it beautiful? No. It is a Google Sheet. We are all doing our best.
But is it useful? Very much so.
What is the Recommendation App?
Okay, I hear you, the directory is REALLY UGLY. You don’t do ugly. There is (sort of) an app for that.
I made a nifty tool that lets you find all of my recs in a much more intuitive way than the directory. The downside is that (for now) you can’t access the playlists through it. The upside is it’s actually fun to use.
It’s a bonus available for annual paid subscribers.
What is the Discord?
This is the community side of New Bands for Old heads — the place where you can discuss music, swap recommendations, share what you’re listening to, ask for suggestions, and generally keep the conversation going between posts.
Basically, it’s our little supernerd treehouse where we can hang out and chat in a fully zero-gatekeeping zone.
We also do monthly book club, radio hours/listening hangs, and the occasional IRL meetup at festivals and shows. It has been a genuinely kind, funny, low-pressure space, which I appreciate more than I can say, and it’s a testament to how amazing this community is ❤️.
