If You Like [X] Then You'll Like [Y]: Twee
Twee is one of the most tight-knit and self-referential genres of all time, making 1:1 comparisons across the decades tough. Instead, you get all of them at the same time.
Holy shit, MORE twee?
Remarkably, yes. Even after force-feeding you a 10,000 word, 20 year old article (that I didn’t write!), then picking up where that article left off and walking you through about a dozen albums that span all 40+ years of twee’s history, I still have more to say. Sheesh!
This week will be easier though, don’t worry. Yes, there will be more to read if you’re up for it, but mostly you just have to sit back and listen. Let the jangly, chime-y guitars wash over you.
Here’s what I’ve cooked up. Click to skip around. Relax. Enjoy.
Every Song from “Twee as Fuck”
The original “Twee As Fuck” Pitchfork essay I kept foisting on you name drops A FUCKING TON of music, but expects you to go searching for it yourself. As far as I know, nobody else has compiled all of it before. Until now! You’re welcome.
NME's C-86 Cassette Compilation
I mentioned “NME’s infamous C-86 cassette comp that brought jangle pop into British indie consciousness” in 1986 — now you can listen to it yourself.
NBfOH’s Twee For All Times Playlist
My own mix of five decades of twee. Try to figure out what’s old and what’s new!
10 More Records for Twee Converts
It’s very rare that my friends and fellow No Ripcord writers David Coleman, Joe Rivers, and Juan Rodriguez are able to agree on a music genre. Somehow, twee/jangle/indie pop unites us. I asked them around to help me share ten more of our favorite albums — from 1981 to 2026.
Psssst — don’t forget you can show off your NBfOH merch to win paid access and free music.
